Why Underwater Photography?

I’ve always felt at home in the water. Growing up by the ocean, I split my childhood between Virginia Beach, Honolulu, and Jacksonville, and I’ve carried that deep connection to the sea with me ever since. Fun fact—mermaids are the official mascot of Virginia Beach, and I’ve always considered myself one at heart.

Water is where I feel most at peace. It’s both powerful and serene, capable of shaping landscapes, carving through stone, and sustaining life. Being able to create artwork beneath the surface is a privilege I deeply cherish.

No two underwater portrait sessions are ever the same—each experience is as unique as the person in front of the camera. When you book an underwater session with me, you’ll be guided by an expert in posing, lighting, and movement, ensuring you feel comfortable and confident in this weightless, otherworldly environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, you don’t need to be an expert swimmer to enjoy your underwater portrait session! As long as you can tread water, you’ll be just fine. The goal of these sessions is not swimming but rather floating, posing, and capturing graceful movement underwater. We also have pool noodles available if you need extra support between shots, and the environment is carefully controlled to ensure your safety and comfort.

The water is 5.5 feet deep at the deepest point, so even if you’re on the shorter side, you’ll be able to reach the bottom if needed. You will need to hold your breath for short periods, but nothing extreme—typically about 10 to 15 seconds at a time. We take frequent breaks to ensure you stay comfortable and never push beyond what feels natural for you.

Yes! Safety is a top priority, and we always have a dedicated safety swimmer on-site. Their job is to monitor the session, provide assistance if needed, and ensure that we are maintaining a safe and controlled environment at all times. You can relax knowing there’s always an extra set of trained eyes watching over us.

If at any point you feel uncomfortable or need a break, just let us know! We can pause as often as necessary to ensure that you’re feeling confident and at ease. Underwater photography is a unique experience, and it’s completely normal to need a moment to reset. Your comfort is the most important thing, and we’ll never rush the process.

Most underwater sessions last around two hours. While we sometimes go a little longer, underwater photography is physically demanding, and after a couple of hours, we’ll all be ready to wrap up. We take plenty of breaks, but it’s best to be prepared for an active session that will leave you feeling exhilarated (and a little tired)!

No worries, you are hiring me not only because I’m a skilled button presser but also because I am an expert at posing. We will walk through poses together and I will be instructing you in and out of the water.

Yes! I have a lot of gowns and options for underwater, including lingerie, tossing silks, and couture gowns purchased specifically for water photoshoots. You are also welcome to bring your own! Just keep in mind, some fabrics do better in water than others.

If we are shooting in my pool, the water will be between 80-90°F, depending on the time of year and whether we are heating it. This is generally quite comfortable for extended periods. If we’re shooting in natural springs, the water is about 72-74°F year-round, which feels warm in cooler months and “refreshing” in the summer! If you’re sensitive to temperature, we have a very warm robe to wrap up in between shots.

Our pool is a saltwater pool, but that doesn’t mean it’s chlorine-free. Saltwater pools use a salt cell to generate chlorine, but at much lower levels than traditional pools. This means less irritation and damage to hair and skin—you likely won’t even notice the chlorine! If we’re shooting in natural water, like springs, then there’s no chlorine at all, just crystal-clear freshwater.
